How to get on to the first page of Google search results

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 by David Conlisk

Okay so it's a bit of a misleading blog entry title. Web Garden is on the first page of Google search results, but for what search terms? The term is "umbraco developer" and here is a screenshot of Web Garden on the first page of Google results as proof - these things change all the time you know!

So how did this happen? Well the first thing you need is a targeted strategy. By this I mean you need to choose a phrase or phrases that you are aiming to be found easily with. It pays to put some serious thought into this as it's very difficult and wasteful of your time to try and change your strategy mid-stream (although it can be done you are definitely going to have to wait longer for your results). I wanted to be found as an Umbraco developer and so that's what I've been aiming for. I have a number of lesser phrases too, but they've been less successful!

Okay, so I've chosen my phrase. Then what? Then you include it in your content as much as possible (within reason). You blog as often as you can about topics related to the phrase, and use the phrase itself often. In my case I've been blogging about Umbraco since June, and I use the word developer all over the site because that is what I am - an experienced Umbraco developer (see what I did there?) This blog entry itself is a great example of what I'm talking about.

I've done a couple of other things such as paid attention to my metatags, set up a ping service so that all blog entries get out there into the blogosphere as much as possible, been active enough in the community to score some links from better blogs than mine, and I only link to other quality, related sites. All of this adds up to great Google page rankings.

Sounds easy? Of course. You could complain at this point that the phrase that I'm targeting ("Umbraco developer") is hardly the most popular one out there, and you'd be right. Achieving the same results for the phrase "wii" or "gps" would be much, much more difficult. But the strategy would incorporate many of the same elements.

Hi Dave a nice little blog post on SEO. I hate SEO with a passion as it is a black art on competitive keywords, but congratulations on your keyword ranking.

Be interested to see some google stats to follow up to see what people are searching for to end up on your site.

    Hi Dave,

    How you getting on?
Glad to see you've got a good ranking for your targeted terms.
    Here's a few more tips:

Add social bookmarking buttons to your blog so readers can easily share your article on Digg etc, you could use like add this http://www.addthis.com

Remember to also add a URL to your signature when you're on Umbraco forums, use Umbraco Developer for the text link etc.

You could also change up your title tag which would help you a lot from, Web Garden Limited | David Conlisk | Certified Umbraco Developer, to Certified Umbraco Developer | David Conlisk | Web Garden Limited

One more, add your blog to www.blogcatalog.com it won't do you no harm.

One final one, when I get started on things like this I always end up not being able to stop, the keyterm "Umbraco CMS" gets over 10k searches a month, write yourself a blog post titled something like "Umbraco CMS: Getting Starting Guide"

Hope this helps, you know you can drop me an email anytime if you need more help.

    Cheers

    Colin
